Flight to Singapore
I fidgeted nervously while watching the sun set over Hong Kong from the airplane window. My next flight to Singapore was boarding in 20 minutes and I was cutting it close! After what seemed like an eternity of taxi-ing and then waiting for those ahead of me to get off the plane, I sprinted through security to my next gate, only to find out that it was delayed anyway! A little more waiting wasn't a big deal and neither was getting my blood moving with a jog after the 15 hour flight I had just gotten off of; I was just happy that I wasn't going to miss my next one.
An hour later, they began the boarding process. As I stepped up to present my ticket, the airline attendant smiled as the most magical words danced out of her mouth:"We have a new seat for you, Miss!"
You would think that getting an upgrade to "Business Class" would make one feel like a badass adult but, for me, it's more like the feeling of Christmas morning or getting a snow day as a kid.
Buying an upgrade is crazy expensive. It's not a luxury I've ever sprung for personally. I'm the type of person who would rather book another flight or two than splurge on an upgrade! I'm also not even sure I would enjoy it as much if I paid for it because I would have certain expectations. But when it's given freely? It's like winning the lottery. Pure luck. Pure excitement & joy. Kid on Christmas. SNOW DAY feels.
You can get a lot of great deals when booking flights if you shop around at different airlines, but if you fly as often as I do then sticking with one airline is the way to go. I book with the same airline for most of my flights. In doing so, I've become a priority member. If there are extra seats in the next class up and I'm the highest status member in economy, I get an upgrade. A lot of airlines offer frequent flyer programs or credit cards you can earn points for free flights through.
Some people only fly First or Business Class & they will never even know what it's like to fly economy. They'll also never know the excitement of getting an upgrade as an economy girl. I fully appreciate every second of it; I try not to even sleep so I don't miss anything! I get to feel royal, if only for a little while! I mean, we're talking free champagne & toiletries, snacks, actual food(!), warm, scented towels before meals, tablecloths, real glasses, silverware AND SLIPPERS! Not having to put my shoes on and off to go to the bathroom is the real deal. I'm so grateful for the few opportunities I've been given to experience it first-hand.
Travel tips:
*Even if you do score a seat in Business Class, the little pillows aren't the softest. I pack a cozy pillowcase from home to put over the pillow for comfort!
*Always pack a toothbrush & toothpaste in your carry-on; it's amazing what a brush can do to make you feel better during a long flight!
*Get up & stretch! 15 hours on a plane is no joke and it's not good to be sitting for that long. Each time I get up for a bathroom break, I spend 5-10 extra minutes either walking around or doing yoga. Sure, I may be the weird girl in downward-facing dog wherever I can find space, but being weird never felt so good!
